Books, micrforms, periodicals, newspapers, diaries, manuscripts, etc. have been collected by NYSHA since its founding in 1899 to relate the stories of the past to the present day. This collection, housed in a research library built in 1968 comprises more than 80,000 volumes of American history & art, museology, material culture, family history, genealogy, 18th century craft processes, and agriculture. Strong collection of 19th century rural life, Native American art, folk art, genealogy and local history. Manuscript holdings document life 19th-century Central NY life. Papers includes letters of Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr before their famous duel.
